thyroid function tests in patients with chalazia

چکیده
purpose: to evaluate the prevalence of clinical and subclinical thyroid disorders using thyroid function tests in patients with single and multiple chalazia. methods: a complete ophthalmologic examination and thyroid function tests including thyroid stimulating hormone (tsh), thyroxine (t4) and triiodothyronine (t3) were performed in 60 patients with single chalazia and 50 patients with multiple chalazia, consecutively referred to poostchi eye clinic, shiraz, iran and compared with 60 age- and gender-matched control subjects. results: mean tsh values were higher in patients with single (3.89 mu/l) and multiple (4.80 mu/l) chalazia as compared to controls (3.02 mu/l) (p= 0.23). no significant difference was detected for t4 levels between patients with single or multiple chalazia as compared to controls. the prevalence of blepharitis was 18% in patients with single chalazia, 34% in patients with multiple chalazia, both of which were higher than controls (5%) (p<0.001). the difference between patients with single and multiple chalazia in terms of the prevalence of blepharitis was also significant (p<0.05) conclusion: there was no significant difference between patients with single and multiple chalazia in comparison with controls regarding thyroid function tests; however the prevalence of blepharitis in patients with multiple chalazia was higher than patients with single chalazia and both figures were higher than controls.

We compared the free-thyroxine index in normal adults and in euthyroid patients taking diphenylhydantoin. All subjects had normal serum thyrotropin concentrations. Serum thyroxine concentrations were determined by two commonly used competitive protein-binding assays, which yielded slightly different values, but which consistently showed the same degree of decrease in mean serum thyoxine concent...

It is excusable for doctors to believe that if the serum thyroxine concentration is higher than the so-called normal range that the dose of thyroxine sh...
متن کاملEnlarged thyroid gland with normal thyroid function tests.
A 41-year-old woman had a 1to 2-cm asymptomatic thyroid mass, which had been monitored by an endocrinologist for several years with serial sonography. Noting that it had enlarged in the face of normal thyroid function tests, the endocrinologist ordered a fine-needle aspiration biopsy, which showed a cellular follicular lesion. Although some of the nuclear changes seen in papillary carcinoma wer...

In this paper, we review the tests that are executed to aid the diagnosis of thyroid dysfunction. Thyroid function tests provide information at physiological, pathological and anatomical levels. Along with history and physical examination they owe to many specific findings that are associated with thyroid functioning. So an attempt has been made to put forward a gist of thyroid function tests. ...
متن کاملInterpretation of thyroid function tests.
The introduction of sensitive thyrotropin assays and free thyroid hormone measurements has simplified the interpretation of thyroid function tests. However, important pitfalls and difficult cases still exist. In this review, thyroid function test results are grouped into six different patterns. We propose that if assays for thyrotropin, free T3, and free T4 are all done, knowledge of these patt...
